Cartier Platinum Tonneau Double Fuseau Ref. 2487, Macau Edition 1999

The Tonneau is among the most historically significant case shapes in Cartiers catalogue. Introduced in 1906, its curved, barrel-form case predates the Baignoire, the Tank, and nearly every other shaped watch in the French maisons canon. The Double Fuseau literally double spindle, referring to its dual time zone complication applied that elegant form to a genuinely functional purpose: two independent time zones displayed across a single dial, each with its own pair of hands, readable at a glance without subdials or pushers.

Reference 2487 represents one of the more refined expressions of this complication. The case is platinum, measuring 26 by 46mm a proportion that wears closer to a dress watch than a sports piece, the tonneau curvature conforming naturally to the wrist. The silver dial is laid out with characteristic Cartier restraint: Roman numerals, blued steel hands, and the two sets of hour and minute hands differentiated clearly enough to be legible without crowding. Manual winding adds a tactile dimension appropriate to the watchs character.

This particular example belongs to a series produced to mark the handover of Macau to the Peoples Republic of China on 20 December 1999 a historically significant moment and the last colonial handover in Asia, following Hong Kongs return two years prior. Cartier produced a limited number of commemorative pieces for the occasion, of which this is one. The Macau connection gives the reference a specificity and cultural context that elevates it beyond a standard production piece.

The watch presents in excellent condition with very minor wear and is offered with original box and papers.
